I'm from California, born and raised, but my family is living in Colorado and I'm sick of the high costs of California, so next year my fiancee and I will be moving to Colorado. We use to live in Santa Cruz which has a population of 60,000 and we loved it (although it did get a little boring). Now we live in San Diego and it's way too big for us. Unfortionately we won't be able to check out some cities in Colorado before we move, so I'm asking for people's opinions. We've narrowed it down to Fort Collins, Boulder (although Boulder's a bit expensive) and Colorado Springs. Which of those three cities do you think is best and why? We're not big on the night scene or anything, we're really just looking for a nice place with lots of stuff to do outside (especially with our dog) and nice people.

Fort Collins, Boulder, and Colorado Springs are all very nice places to live. Fort Collins has a population of 128,000 and is the home of Colorado State University. Boulder has a population of 92,000 and is the home of the University of Colorado. Colorado Springs has a population of 370,000 and is the home of the Colorado College and the United States Air Force Academy.

The three towns could not be more different politically. Boulder is very liberal, Colorado Springs is very conservative, and Fort Collins is pretty much in the middle politically.

Boulder is just 29 miles from the Colorado State Capitol, the center of the Denver metropolitan area, population 2,300,000. Fort Collins is 63 miles from Denver, and Colorado Springs is 68 miles from Denver.

Ther are several other Colorado towns you may want to consider. Grand Junction has a population of 45,000 and is the home of Mesa State College. Durango has a population of just 16,000, but it sits at the edge of the San Juan Mountains and is the home of Fort Lewis College.

Relative Cost of Living in Colorado:

La Junta $57,212
Pueblo $63,129
Grand Junction $64,916
Colorado Springs $65,547
Fort Collins $74,147
Denver $77,089
Boulder $78,404
Durango $86,306
Vail $162,014

Fort Collins is also expensive. My sister lives in Colorado Springs and she really enjoys it - precisely for the reasons you stated.

Colorado Spring is very nice, but have you considered Pueblo? It has a University. It is right on the Arkansas River. Close to mountains.
