the point is not to feel any pain but u can't feel your legs or anything either from the waist below. which to me i found it annoying, with my second child it wore off before i had her and so i still felt some pain. with my 3rd child i chose not to get one and i don't regret it, when u get the epidural u are missing an incredibly amazing experience of having your child. i would recommend not getting one , they can give u meds to ease them up just a bit but u will still have the full experience. i might also mention that when i had mine it also made my labor stop, so it took that much longer to have the baby which isn't a good thing because of the fact the cord was wrapped around his neck and he was going through distress and the doc didn't want to do a c-section on me because he thought i was too young. so it actually caused more problems than what it should have when i got the epidural, and if u are overweight i definately wouldn't recommed it because its harder for them to locate where it needs to go

Being in labor is very painful however, if you asks for the epidural it will give you some relieve. When you are doing the actual pushing of the baby, you will feel pressure. I speak from experience..
I am pregnant now 35 weeks and I want to try to not asks for the epidural but if the pain is unbearable I am going to do what I have to do...

those are very dangerous and many things can go wrong when they are used they prolong labor they have drugs that are non narcotic that help with the pain nothing gets rid of the pain no matter what u can still feel the pressure. my main prob with and epidural is that if done incorrectly it can cause permenant paralysis so if you are going to chose that method check out the anesthesiologist thouroghly one wrong move and your in a wheelchair for life a friend of mine experienced off and on paralysis after using one of those. u can also deliver underwater it is suposed to make the labor easier on you and the baby look into all your options before commiting to that webmd would be a good place to compare the different types of delivery methods and should list the pros and cons of all the options out there they dont call it labor for nothing I delivered an 8# 12 oz baby with nothing and believe it or not it was my easiest delivery

I've had epidural twice. With first son, it was administered early on in labour and worked pretty good, I still felt some cramping like it didn't reach one area of my pain.
With my second delivery, they did not administer it in time and it did not work at all! That was real pain. I say even an epidural that doesn't work 100 % is better than one that doesn't work at all. I'm pregnant with third and plan on asking for an epidural as soon as I walk in the door of the hospital.:)
FYI: Alot of people say that it drugs your baby but this is false info. It is a SPINAL BLOCK and does not enter the bloodstream, therefor does not cross through the placenta to baby. Good Luck!

After the epidural is administered, there is no labor pain at all. There is no sensation below the level of the injection, but normal sensation above it, until it wears off. The epidural is usually not administered until labor is well under way, though, so there is the usual labor pain up until this point. After the epidural wears off, you can feel the usual pain from the trauma of childbirth: tearing, episiotomy, bruising and stretching, etc.

An epidural should stop all pain, if, it is properly inserted. You will feel some pressure when you have to push and that's about it. I had one with my third child and I didn't get it until I was 9 cm dialated. It helped to have it with the back labor and the fact that my baby was over 11 pounds.

Ive had 3 children all natural and never wanted an epidural. Im pregnant again and thought about it until my best friend who just had a baby a week ago, told me never to get one. She had 2 babies naturally and decided to get an epidural with her 3rd one and she is still having troubles with it. Her back is killing her and she told me that during labor she was even more miserable with the epidural than she was having natural birth. She said she will never do the epidural again.

i had an epidural with my second child and all it did was send my right leg dead. it kept falling off the bed they had to get a nurse just to hold it in-to position so i could push. all the other labor pains were there it didn't work for me that time but its different every time you have it. i would consider having another one but if that turned out to be the same i wouldn't be impressed. it took over 24hrs for me to be able to use my leg properly again, but i did get a room all to myself right next to the toilet as i couldn't go very far without falling over lol

I have had an epidural with all 4 births of mine and it took away most of the pain but you still feel a lot of pressure of the baby coming down thru the birth canal. It cant take away all of the feeling.
Good luck!!!
