I went and had it looked at..I felt like it was my transmission because it would buck when it got to 40mph..I ran into a transmission mechanic who put tranmission fluid and lucas in the car because the fluid was low....It all ran out.He looked under the car and noticed I had a hole in my back tail housing located on or by my transmission. He told me I don't need a whole tranmission just should get that part repaired.. The questions are?
Is that true? Do they have to pull my transmission down or anything and how long will it take to fix it.. Thanks for any suggestions...

if it is the rear seal, you will see fluid come out there, and you only have to drop and pull out the drive-shaft for that. p.s. the check engine light comes on automatically every 30,000 miles, or running low on gas and picking up moisture in bottom of tank that oxy. sensor is picking up, or you have driven kind of quick and spotty recently (you can make the light come on to see for yourself, just drive like you have a lead foot temporarily and the sensor will register excess emmissions - it goes back off when you stop driving like that), in other words the check engine light has nothing to do with your transmission

It could be true. Depends on some variables. The output section of the transmission can be replaced, but, what caused the hole to begin with? Damaged from the outside or the inside and will replacing the broken housing completely repair the problem or is it a bandaid to a bigger problem? Important questions!!! The time and cost to do the repairs will vary depending the Explorer being 2 or 4 wheel drive. 99% are 4 x 4, so you should be looking at around 6 hours and $400 to $500 in labor charges depending on your areas going shop rates. Ask them to use a used part if possible. However, this repair may not be directly related to the check engine light. Use a very respected and reputable shop if you can.

Stay away from that clown. He'll just shotgun the problem until you get tired of giving him money. Keep an eye on the tach when it bucks. Engines bogging can cause some rodeo class bucking too.
You can get an OBDII scanner that will tell you what the engine light means. It runs about $70 for a basic one and is well worth it.

Best thing is to take it to a shop and let someone who knows what he's doing work on your car. Hey, it's cheaper than buying a new one..... unfortunately maintenance is part of ownership.
