My washing machine used to be totally quiet, but now it is mildly loud when draining the water, just before each spin cycle. It is not very noisy when actually spinning. Anyone ever had to deal with this and know what it is? It's a 1996, GE Profile, electric model.

your drain trap is probably restricted

Worked appliances for two years... if the noise doesn't stop after the clothes are repositioned then it sounds like something is either trapped between the drum and the side wall or the belt may be off course a bit and wouldn't be noticed until the drum is spun at a high speed. If you have some one handy have em check it out... most washers have lower front panels that can be removed others have to be laid on it's back ONLY and serviced from the underside.

There is a possibility that the pump motor may be going out. Check the drain hose and the drain itself to see that is open and running freely. The only sound you should hear is the water draining and a slight hum from the pump motor.

Pull the hose off the pump from the tank and stick your finger
inside and remove the bra wire or other trash
