I'm partial to really well-made, all-leather (leather soles a must) loafers or lace-up oxfords.
'Joan and David' used to make some excellent ones, though the quality's slipped since they sold the company. That said, so has the price.
Birkenstocks are usually hideous, but worth it for the comfort.
Aerosoles make some reasonably tasteful, lower-priced women's 'dressy-casual' shoes.
Well-made + classic style = comfort. Lace-up oxfords have been around for a while, and popular with all ages, for good reason. As for 'well-made,' get ready to spend a lot, but expect to hang on to them for years.

What the brand of shoe is doesn't matter. Buy a shoe, remove the padding, and replace with a high quality insole.
Tips for an insole:
- check the back of the insole, if the back of the insole doesn't match the back inside of the shoe, then you risk having an exposed edge that your foot will sit on.
- Thicker is generally better. However if it is too thick your foot will be pressed uncomfortably against the top of the shoe.
- Insoles are designed for various problems. Everything from a clumsy step to support for work shoes have insole designed to help. Consider what you need best.
- Discount stores are a very bad place to look for high quality insoles. There are stores at most malls that sell quality insoles and tons of stores online.
Past that the only things a shoe can provide is a shock absorber in the heel and traction designed for how you place each step, straight forward, or out. Don't get anything that uses air pockets, when water gets into them, they squeak at every step.
Currently I wear a new balance sneaker. Ones I have are a durable shoe. They are still in good shape after better than a year's use. I understand from friends that my shoe is no longer being produced by new balance. I'll probably try a place like Lands End next as they don't cost as much as mall stores.

My husband and son like Van's suede sneakers, and a female manager at work likes them too. I prefer Reeboks, because they come in wide widths. If you're a female, I'd reccommend a new brand called Nurture. They come in casual and dressy, and have gel pads built in from heel to toe.
