How to write a symbolism paper?

I need to write a paper on symbolisms but I dont know what the heck Im doing.

Its the idea that things can stand for something else. For example, when we think of the American flag, we think of the United States, just as any countries flag represents their country. The flag is not the country but represents the country or is a symbol of it. You are probably having to write a paper on what things represent something else or where the symbolism comes from.
