to be on the safe side, put it on a low heat/low dry setting.... you might also consider spraying it with oust or lysol and leaving the door open to let it air dry.

The "funky smell" in your dryer is most likely not in the dryer but in the venting. Unless the dryer has a lot of lint buildup inside and you have it in a very humid area it should not develop an odor.
The venting is more likely to develop an odor from the blockage and moisture from drying clothes with a blocked vent. The moisture will cause the lint buildup in the vent to get wet and may even have water laying there breading all kinds of fowl smelling things.
Clean or replace the venting and you will solve the odor problem.
You can run a dryer empty for as long as you want at any temperature setting without any damage to the dryer unless the vent is blocked.

No it woudn't hurt; however the smell may come from the exhaust the tube that leads out of the driver. It might be full. Those things should be vacuumed out from time to time. They are also inexpensive and easy to repace. The dryer vent is what it is called and one of the biggest sources of house fires.

Check the hoses and lint filter. Give the insides a good cleaning with white vinegar. Let it 'air out' instead of turning it on, that will only make the smell worse.

For what you are trying to accomplish, hey, go for it!! It's beats having to purchase a new dryer...no, it will not overheat for a matter of 10 minutes, in fact, it may take a minute or so to get to the desired temp.....hope it works for you....

yeah it's ok...
the question is what kind of funky smell. you may have something in your lint trap or air tube that's not supposed to be there. also, is your air tube easily accessible from outside? a creature could of gotten in it and died.
