Go by your language and math scores. Almost every college ignores the essay portion. That part seems to be a way for the college board to get more money from you.

A general rule about the SATs is that an average score on one test will be about 500. A score of 600 beats about 2/3rds of the kids taking that test, and a score of 700 beats roughly 90% of the kids. So, a score of 1700 total on three tests is a bit better than average. (in other words, it is respectable, but not terrific.)
If you have good solid grades in your courses at high school and a 1800 total, you should be able to get into a good, respectable school - maybe not the Ivies, but a good school.

It is probably in the 60th to 65th percentile. Comparable to about a 1200 on the old test. A good score but you won't be getting a full scholarship.

It will get you into the 2nd tier universities, but you'll need better to get into the Ivy League/Cal Tech/MIT/UC schools.

US News and World Report, as well as a number of other publications, will give you detailed data about the average scores that get admitted to most Universities. This should give you an idea where you can expect to be admitted.

It's slightly above average in comparison to other kids your age. However, it is not the only thing that influences your college admission! Remember that the essays, your GPA, your extracurriculars, your volunteering, and even your race and class can influence your admission into school.

College admission is really a hit and miss process that isn't always fair or even logical. For example, I've know people get denied by University of Texas-Austin and get into Columbia University (yes, the Ivy League school). But, good luck and don't stress yourself out too much.

its a pretty good score
since the average of the 2006 college-bound student is
Critical reading: 503
Mathematics: 518
Writing: 497

n the writing portion is looked at no matter what that other person said
since it is new it will be a couple of years before colleges really look at that part of your scores more closely
