I want to save some from being eaten by bigger fish, so I asked my friend to get me a tank and feeder fish. But what kind, guppies or goldies? What do you think? And no, I DON'T CARE IF GOLDFISH ARE MESSY. Which one?

Ooh, and will a 3 1/2 to 4 in. gold gourami eat tiny feeder fish, or are gouramis too small?

Since you want to save them then hopefully you will have a proper size tank and filter and everything else they need. Otherwise instead of getting eaten and having a quick death they will have a long painful death. So before you decide think about what size tank they will need and if you can take care of them properly.

Fish are opportunistic. If it's there and able to be eaten, they will more than likely eat them. That being said, putting them together and not meaning to feed the goldfish would be bad as goldfish are carp and thus not piscivores (fish eaters). Although a few guppies may not be horrible for their heath, it's not on their regular menu and could cause negative health effects- especially when they guppies are wild caught and could carry diseases. GL!

You might like to know... Most of the fish bought as feeders are not so healthy and often die whether they are fed to something, or not. Also, by buying them you are only creating more of a market for feeder fish.

If you still want to get feeders, you should probably get guppies, because goldfish are messy. ;)

With goldfish you probably won't get babies. But with the guppies you will have alot. I have guppies and me aunt has goldfish (feeders) she saved a few also. Goldfish can get quite big so mind the size of tank have. Guppies will have fry and more fry. I wouldn't put either in with gourami I pretty sure they will get eaten.

I would go with gold fish. If your tank is set up the right way they'll survive if taken care of. Not to mention they'll grow big enough were you could put them into a large out door pond. I have several that survived in a tank that were bought as food for a turtle and my kids adopted them and now there almost 8 inches long and they are beautiful.
