That is a very good question. Although it sounds terribly pedantic, I must answer your question with a question. When are you talking about ? The chief difference in the two is violence, in one decade the Socialists claim to be non violent while the Communists insist on the Revolution of the Proletariat. In another decade it is the Socialists who are saying their system should be brought about by force of arms, while the Communists insist that violence is unnecessary. Beyond this difference, you may find a general belief that Socialism is really an economic system while Communism is a method of governing a state. Certainly however, the Communist State has many of the Socialist features of government ownership and "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need". In practice, Socialist economies as in Sweden seem to work well, while Communist states appear to be overburdened with the responsibility that goes with managing both the economy and the polity.

Communism: a political system characterized by a centrally planned economy with all economic and political power resting in the hands of the central government.
Socialism: a social and political philosophy based on the belief that democratic means should be used to evenly distribute wealth throughout a society.

Pure Communism is an ideal type of government. All share, and share alike-work, payment, etc.,. However it does not work as there are always those who want their share without putting in the effort, and those who want more than their share-to make themselves wealthy, powerful, and such.
Socialism is a form of government where the central government takes everything and gives it out as it sees fit. This works better than Communism, but it gives the people no freedom.

Communism is when jackboot wearing thugs murder hundreds of millions of innocent people and gives the excuse that they do it for the good of the people.
Socialism is when jackboot wearing thugs murder hundreds of millions of innocent people and gives the excuse that they do it for the good of a state that works at the behest of the people.
National Socialism is when jackboot wearing thugs murder hundreds of millions of innocent people and give the excuse that they do it for the good of a state that people have an inherit responsibility to bow down to and obey.
Islam is when jackboot wearing thugs murder hundreds of millions of innocent people and give the excuse that they do it because some demonic moon god figure that some psychopath sacrificed innocent men, women and children to hundreds of years ago, demands it of them.
Does it really matter what the difference is? It's just cosmetic. The important thing to understand is that they WILL kill hundreds of MILLION of INNOCENT people, unless you stop them with military force. When they show up in the middle of the night to take you and your family away to the "showers", fight them. Leave their bodies piled high around your home as you say NO and stand with your neighbors and your country against them. The price of not doing this has been paid time and time again.....in germany, in russia, in china, in north korea, in cuba, in every country in the middle east, in many countries in africa and south america.
It could easily happen here. But only if you stand by and do nothing.

In a communist government the government controls everything you do, In a socialist they control alot of what you do but are more lenient. Like if you want to start a business in a communist place they will control what you sell, how you sell it, how many you sell etc.... In a socialist they make sure you are equal with everyone else in your business.

A simple but accurate explanation:
It is the small difference between an Moderate Democrat and a Liberal Democrat.
(Both would take away our freedoms and turn us into little pinko commies.)
