The league already made its money when Fox and XM radio signed the dotted line for long term broadcasting rates. The networks will make their money every year. The ad rates will keep going up every year. When the contracts expire, MLB will point out the ratings to interested parties and use the ratings to jack up the next contract.
The only people talking about the ratings are the people who don't want to do any real reporting. Real baseball fans will watch and that is all that matters.
Some of the greatest World Series featured two teams that were not in high profile markets: 1997 Marlins and Indians, 1993 Blue Jays and Phillies, 1991 Twins and Braves, 1987 Twins and Cardinals, 1985 Royals and Cardinals, 1982 Cardinals and Brewers, 1979 Pirates and Orioles.
A seven game series with lower ratings will still attract more viewers than any four game series with five games.

This is good for baseball, **** the executives, bringing more fans into the game is necessary for the health of a sport, football is so popular because it seems that a different teams rise up every year so fans watch from everywhere because their hometown team has a chance. These "unsupported" teams are exactly who needs to be in the World Series. People are obsessed with ratings because they need something to whine about since their teams are out of the playoffs.

First of all...congrats on your Tigers making it to the World Series. I hope they beat the crap out of St.Lousy. I'll admit,I'm a Yankees fan in awe over here! I have a beef with St.Louis since they didn't even bother to show up in '04 when they faced Boston.
Ratings seem to have taken over. Once upon a time, these games were played during the day. I guess they're trying to target a certain market. What ticks me off is when the network and radio omit things like..oh...our national anthem or they miss the 1st pitch because they are playing commercials that nobody cares about.
GO TIGERS!! (for now)

I don't think anybody other that television people really care about ratings. Yeah, if the ratings are down, you always hear about it on television, radio or newspaper. But when was the last time you heard somebody walking down the street saying "Man, did you see game 6 last night? That was incredible! And 13.5 million households across America agree with me!" My personal list of concerns when it comes to the World Series looks something like:
1) Who will win?
2) I hope it is competitive.
8) Should I press the mute button so I don't have to listen to Joe Buck anymore?
723) I wonder what the ratings of this game are?

Well, first to answer your question... i believe youve answered it. the people watch the game to say they are a baseball fan, even if they know that theyll get bored of it.
anyway, dentata, youve got it all wrong. im a met fan, have been since i was 7. how dare you say were too cocky. almost every sports analyst since june has said that the mets are going to the world series. and not only that, but weve trodded thru sh*t for the past 6 years, and they yankee fans have been the oppressor. we werent cocky, we were just soaking up the joy of us finally going further than the yanks. in new york, if you dont live in the bronx, the stereotypical yankee fan either:
A) doesnt kno crap about baseball and says they are a yankee fan so they rent made out to be a dumbass.
B) has one of those "my sh*t dont stink" personalities, if you know what i mean, and needs to back it up by rooting for the best team in baseball. or
C) Actually appreciates baseball, but is so cocky that they just overshadow their one good trait.
Go to NY and i guarantee you that 4 of every 5 yankee fans fit in to one of those categories.

The only people who are obsessed are the 'whiners'.
You don't hear a peep out of real fans of the game (nor those who are more than content by NOT having a New York team in the Series).
It's all good by them and the "silence is golden".

I would say the fan bases for these two teams are in the top 10 for MLB. Yankees being #1.
Dodgers, Cubs, White Sox, Red Sox, Phillies, Giants, being the others. and Braves
The Ratings will be fine.
Better than Minnesota vs. San Diego

I hate to get you upset but ratings do matter because that's how the networks make their money. People would love to see a NYY vs NYM affair or even a Detroit vs NYM because both teams haven't won a world series in over twenty years. But a STL and D-Town I don't know but I bet it won't be pretty. Ciao.

Next years ad revenue (the amount of $$$ companies pay to run an ad) during next years World Series is the reason they care about the ratings.
If this years series gets low ratings, then the network will not be able to raise ad rates for next years.
Follow the dollar my friends, that will always lead you to the truth.
