My boyfriend just bought a new car, and says it's too quiet, and he wants to put an exhaust system on it. He's all about POWER and knowing that his car is faster than another guys car, when the other guys car is pretty fast. What's the big deal with the noise and the power? Is it a guy thing? I just...don't understand and it gets really annoying! (I keep that to myself though)

To a large extent this IS a guy thing, but I know several "gals" that are also in to it. Guys who are into noise and power for power's sake usually have low self esteem (been there, done...). Younger guys usually do not have the experience to understand that you can have power and be quiet. And that having lots of power won't necessarily make you go fast. Nothing blows the other guy's mind better than beating him with a quieter car.

Now, on to the relationship, I can tell you from experience that unless you develop this enthusiasm for things automotive, your relationship will suffer. You may tolerate each other, and even love each other, but cars will always be in the way.

1) Can you say TESTOSTERONE?
2) Competition (Natural male drive)
3) Controlled aggression (Natural Male drive)

Then there ARE the other PSYCHO-BABBLE crud...
Penis envy (suffered by some, but not NEARLY majority)
Infantile and juvenile baggage ("Daddy didn't love me")
and the like, but there are some responses and behaviors that are clearly MALE, and with the exception of feminist extremists, is perfectly acceptable. (Would you prefer a husband (or B/F) that was NOT territorial to some degree, who would let any loudmouth bully push him and YOU around with impunity?.
Just a sign of a healthy young man. It is the disciplined young man who keeps those drives under control. It is called Civility.

Your b/f has a small penis and is trying to compensate for it. It's a sign of insecurity. He feels that he was short-changed, so inorder to bring himslef up a level or two, he will need a faster car so people will show him some respect that he is missing. He wants his car to reflect an image that he desires.

I like loud exhaust even if my car doesnt have a lot of HP. Its just weird when you cant hear your vehicle running.

LOUD exhaust don't make fast cars.
However I fully agree with every thing else said.
