The sun would be 2.78 miles away from your 15" globe.

I used:

diameter of Earth: 12,756.3 km
mean Earth-Sun distance: 150,000,000 km

Aloha

I also used the exploratorium's build a solar system calculator. You can't enter the size of Earth directly, but by trial and error I found that a sun 1,639 inches (136.6 feet) in diameter gives a 15 inch Earth at a distance of 14,677 feet or 2.78 miles from the sun.

Divide 15 inches by 8000 (earth diameter in miles). Multiply the 0.001875 by 93 million (distance to sun in miles). Divide the 174375 inches by 12 to get 14531.25 feet. Divide that by 5280 to get 2.75 miles. I guessed on the 8000. At the exploratorium link put 1639 inches in for the sun's diameter and it will give you a 2.77 mile radius. Pretty close, eh?

Here, use this tool:

http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/solar_system/

It gives you all the data. It will tell you that if your model of the Earth is 15" in diameter, to be to scale the Sun would have to be 136' 6.6" in diameter and 1 mile 404 feet away from the Earth.

Incidentally, the most distant planet, Neptune, would be almost 84 miles away from your Sun on average.

The sun is roughly 11,000 Earth diameters away. So 11,000 x 15 or
165,000 inches. 13750 feet. 2.6 miles
Jacob's page is a good one, but he got the numbers wrong. Just put in 1639 for the sun's size in inches and you'll get the numbers for a 15" Earth.

150 million KM when the earth is at normal size (12,000 KM)
so... 12500 times 15"
so... 187500 inches, or 15625 feet, or 5208 yards, or 2.96 miles.

So you would have to put your globe almost 3 miles away if the sun was in your house!
