Lemmy Kilmister (born Ian Fraiser Kilmister, December 24, 1945, also known as Ian Fraiser Willis and Lemmy the Lurch) is an English bass player and singer. He is known primarily as the founding member and leader of the heavy metal band Motörhead. His unmistakable appearance, with his facial moles, sideburn to moustache connection (now known as "The Lemmy"), and gravelly voice have made him a cult figure known well beyond the world of rock music.

Lemmy was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire and raised in Anglesey, Wales. His father, a clergyman, left the family when Lemmy was three months old; the experience helped to imbue a deep hatred of religion in Lemmy and this is reflected in a number of his songs.

Although the nickname 'Lemmy' is supposed to come from his days as a roadie when he would ask people to 'Lemme (lend me) a fiver', Kilmister's autobiography maintains that he has been known as Lemmy since he was around 10.

Lemmy Kilmister

1975: After being fired from Hawkwind, Lemmy Kilmister decides to form a band called Bastard. When his manager informs him that a band by that name will never get a slot on "Top of the Pops," he changes it to Motorhead. The lineup consists of Lemmy on bass and vocals, Larry Wallace on guitar and Lucas Fox on drums. The band hits the studio by the end of the year, and during the recording sessions, Lucas is replaced by Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor.
