Anything close to the bone hurts more than fleshy parts. Ankles are sensitive and *very* close to the bone.

They hurt everywhere or anywhere, some places more than others. The pain is bearable though, I'm assuming you don't already have any. As someone said, closer to the bone tends to hurt more than fleshy parts, so try and avoid the ankle bone itself, also the inside of the leg is more painful than the outside, and closer to the foot more painful than above the ankle bone for example, as a rule of thumb anyway. The pain is a lot less after the initial minute or so, once your body starts producing endorphines, so you'll be ok, if you want it, go for it, the pain is temporary, but your tattoo will be there forever! Eat some chocolate before getting it done to boost your blood sugar, relax and don't fight the pain, and you'll be fine. And find a good tattooist, who can give you a good design, and execute it well. Good luck! And in reply to a previous answer, I think there's plenty of respectable people with tattoos, they're nothing to be ashamed of, you can't judge a person by the colours of their skin, can you?

Tattoos hurt everywhere - they're someone stabbing you a couple of hundred times a minute with a needle and injecting ink into it!

According to my best friend (who is a walking gallery) the ones nearest the bones hurt the most because you can feel the vibration all along the bone. Its a bit like the dentists drill - you don't feel pain as such, its more an intense sense of discomfort.

If you are worried about it, tell you tattooist to give you a breather every couple of minutes. Or, even better, don't get it done at all. My friend had a hell of a job getting a wedding dress that hid the tattoos. There may be a day in the future where you want to look respectable and classy (wedding, job interview...) and a tattoo somewhere visible will kill the good impression.

Think carefully if you're not sure.

Yes they do. Generally the thinner the skin of the area being tattooed, the more it hurts. So a fleshy area like your bum is a lot less painful than an ankle.

The amount of pain also depends on the complexity of the design you're having done, as it's the black outlining of the tattoo that hurts the most. The colouring in part just feels like scratching.

Yes it will, anything on the ankle has no flesh to soften the pain. Anyway, If you are the young lady in the picture, why do you need a tattoo? They may look OK when your young, but wait until your old, your going to look pretty silly. I'm only thankful that my daughters never wanted that sort of thing, I always brought them books to draw in.

I wouldn't know but I have heard that getting a tattoo on any area close to a bone hurts more.

Only have the one small one - on my ankle, so nothing to compare it to. However, I don't seem to remember it hurting very much at all.

i've heard that anywhere where there is bone hurts more than a very fleshy place, but i'm not speaking from personal experience. if you're in the fort wayne area and want one, check out Hadley at Studio 13. if you want to ask him (and have myspace) check out his page.

It will hurt like hell, don't do it. Did you know that only prostitutes wore anklets or marks on their ankles as a sign of their trade in earlier years.
