In fact people have moved atoms to spell out words like IBM and taken a picture of that.

They are not really pictures of atoms...what they show is a representation of where the electron clouds would be. I tell me class to try and imagine being blindfolded and walk around the classroom... you will bump into desks so you know they are there but can reallys see what they look like.
