From episode one you can see a spark between the actors, likely because they wanted to keep that option open if they need it.
I assumed that part of their back story had included a 'friends w/ bens' status, but they actually shot that down in a later conversation if I recall. also seeing as it is a prime time teen soap, chances are they will kiss if not more at least once before the series ends.
also had we not seen the "alternate universe" Tree Hill when Nathan crashed the Nascar, that would have made for the ultimate surprise twist series finale
