It dates back to ancient greek times, at least. Read the pantheon.org page for details on the origin - as far as that line of the story goes.
The crystalinks.com and answers.com pages have quite a bit of ancient history on the mythology as well, from all over.
Dash's site at pitt.edu lists some German folklore about the legend of the werewolf.
