I don't play any instruments but I do have a few ideas for some songs....should I write it in a poem form and have every two sentences rhyme with each other and make changes later? Is that a good way? Or should I write it in a "story telling" format?

I always prefer lyrics that tell a story or go somewhere, rather than just lines that rhyme, so I would say try in a story-telling format, but of course rhyming poems can also have a point and convey a story as well.

When I write a song, I usually start with the music and add lyrics, but this isn't the only way to do it. The only problem with writing the lyrics before the music is that the amount of syllables in each line may not correspond correctly with the rhythm/amount of beats in that phrase. Just be careful, and try to keep music mind as you write the song or it may not work out.

Write down what comes into your head. Get it down. You can always revise it later - in fact that's when you will see what works and what doesn't.
It's a really good idea to learn to play something - a keyboard or guitar really help because you can sing while you are playing.
If you can't or don't want to play something get a tape player so you can sing and record any tunes or specific rhythms you come up with. You can write words down but is so easy to forget that amazing tune you heard in your head yesterday.
If you're lucky, find a musician who's happy to make music with you and work together.
Enjoy it.

syllable count is important
but there are no rules
it sounds like you only write lyrics
melody and instrumentation will come in handy
you don't need to play but it helps
knowledge of chords will help
piano would be the best place to start
(Ive written and recorded for 20 years)
good luck

i've written some songs and what i do is write it out like a poem (but not rhyming). it's sort-of a mix between a poem and "story telling". hope it goes well!

i'd say just start putting lyrics 2gether.....make sure it makes sence though,lol.....it's sometimes good 2 start with the chorus, that's usualy where the tittle comes from,so it can give u a good idea of what the song will b about

both are good ideas as far as format, but the structure should come from the theme. I mean, do you wanna write "Fast Car" or do you wanna write "Whip It"?

Start with the rhythm, all songs start with rhythm. Then add melody and harmony...then make your lyrics fit.

Let's face it when you build something you start at the ground and build up right? Well, rhythm is where it all starts.
