I think it's about chivalry. With the mother being a woman, and the dad being a man, it may be the belief that the mother isn't supposed to be on the receiving end of roughness due to her gender.

this is really a black issue. I remember when I was at a public school for 1 year, thank God, I always hear black guys talking about each other, but in the process they would get really offended when they talked about each other's mom. some would even cry.

I guess they get offended more is that they never knew their dad. that seems to make sense to me.

Probably because they feel that dad can look after himself and most people like to think that there is probably a bit of the rogue in dad. Mum however is pure as the driven snow, is poor and defenceless and has to be looked after and defended.

It's likely because fathers feel they're closest to the door of escape.
