People are going way off the point. I think trainspotting in its proper sense, standing at the end of the platform with a vinyl bag containing sarnies and a nice flask of bovril or tea is a wonderfully eccentric British hobby that should be revered, nay given a Royal seal of approval. Personally, I can't see the thrill of it at all, but have massive respect for the devotion to comfy slacks, itchy jumpers and strange skin diseases those who practice the strange art develop.
Irvine Welsh has a lot to answer for, he has clearly totally confused our American cousins.

"Trainspotting" per se is a misnomer in that it started as a movie which became something of a symbol for a new way of showing what society is really like.
"Trainspotting" the movie, shows the everyday life of junkies in Scotland neither in a dramatic nor pitiful way. When Mark Renton and his friends shoot heroin or tried to make their best wretched existence, it appears cool and funny such that the voyeur will not believe that they are the social outsiders.
Similar offshoots should not be taken literally as a social study, but more as an observation and description through film about the way of life of a group of individuals or a panorama in time of specific people living in a certain time and place, akin to a celluloid biography with compressed time in motion.

Yes there are SCUM of the Earth like those junkies living in the UK. They mainly mug old people to fund their habit due to the muscle wastage they get from lying on the floor spaced out of ages. The British government is trying to help change there life but I think they should be just shot. You kill a skill animal why not a kill a useless crime ridden junkie scum!

Train spotting is a pastime practised in countries where trains run on a constant schedule, in which enthusiasts spend time at railway depots, train stations or at trackside vantage points noting down serial numbers of passing trains and locomotives.
It is most popular in the United Kingdom and the United States.
