Why do people risk serious disease to eat oysters? Or, whatever you eat could have food-poisoning. Why do people risk serious injury and death by getting in a car? Why do people drink to excess when they COULD overdose or get in an accident? Why do people go camping and risk an animal attack or weather-related death? And so on and so forth.
Actually the biggest risk on that list is really getting into a car. The chance of dying in a car is so much greater than getting a disease from a tattoo or piercing. It seems that if you take that risk all the time, what's the small risk of getting the tattoo or piercing? The incidence is SO small of bad things happening from a tattoo or piercing, I'd say that the risks are acceptable, at least for me. Though, I really wouldn't get elective surgery because I think the risks are too great... though a lot of people think those risks are REALLY low. So, I guess the best thing to do is get educated about what the risks are and then decide for yourself whether or not it is worth it.
I have been pierced in a few places and never had a problem. Even when I had my eyebrow done, I did worry about infection which COULD possible lead to blindness and I worried about paralysis, but I took the risk anyway. I have also taken the risk of eating oysters even though someone close to me got Hepatitis from oysters...

In fact most cultures from history have practised these arts.
The famous ice mummy "Otzi" from 3300BC has well over a dozen tattoos on his preserved body: http://www.tattoosymbol.com/timeline/timeline-2.html
Tattoos are also found on a large proportion of Scandinavian bog mummies and other preserved bodies going back as far as 5000 BC: http://tattoos.com/bronze.htm
The ancient Chinese, the Romans, the Celtic peoples, the Vikings, the Native Americans, the Inuits, the Aboriginal Australians, the Feudal Japanese... all practised tattoos of some form.
Some people think it is stupid (even sinful) to cut your hair, be a blood donor, to shave...
Basically the reason why so many people from around the world from all of recorded history have decorated themselves is that most people are more stupid than you, oh Great One, and should follow your example.

If you go to a reputable tatoo artist/ piercer, there is no chance of diseases. They sterilize everything. As far as I know, there has never been a reported case of a person contracting a disease from a licensed artist. They are governed by laws and if they do not practice the correct sterilization methods, they would lose their license to practice ... Tatoos and piercings are only dangerous if someone has "home made" tats and piercings.

because we arent scared of taking risks, like you are.
stay safe, live a dull existence.
it is poor practise by the giver of the tattoo's or piercings that causes illness. go to a well known establishment and you will be ok.
you can die from eating poorly prepared poultry too, but do you stop eating it? get a grip on life, and live and let live.
all you people saying it is stupid are the only stupid ones out there. if you get tattooed for spiritual reasons, or to highlight a great time or experience in your life you will never regret it.
If you regret them, you are probably the type of person who is fickle, prone to acting before thinking, and will regret everything you do anyway, even choosing the blue shirt over the red one.
retrospect is a waste of energy. always think before you act in life, and seriously, some of you dont even do that while answering the questions around here.

You think it is silly and masochistic. Body modification is based in culture and has a longer history than you do. Cutting your toenails carries a risk. Not cutting them does, too. (Have to find longer shoes!)
You do everything you do because you want to. Here's to freedom!

If they do it properly, with a licensed practitioner who shows sterile materials being opened and they folow aftercare leaflets, there's not much of a risk at all. However, if like my friend's daughter did, and decided to pierce her own navel at home - they end up in casualty.

Its all about self expression and choice..

Why do people risk eating fast food or at restaurants when someone of ill will could easily contaminate the food?
I have tattoos and I check out the tattoo parlor before I let them ink me. It's all about safety procedures and sanitation.

Hello, all good? I am Simone and use the Yahoo!Resposta in Brazil. I find that these people did not adaptors themselves to the functions of the conscience. These people still dedicate themselves to explore the subconscious mind. Do you understand what I wrote?
