What is the history of which arm to wear a wristwatch ?

Normally a person wears the wristwatch on the opposite of their writing arm. But it doesn't really matter. Where did this tradition start?

It's not that complicated. You wear the watch on your non-dominant hand because you don't want it to get broken or get in the way while you are doing things with the dominant hand.
