I try to work in my room, office, anything. Noise inturrupts me, anxieties of my brother coming in and ripping my papers, anxiousness to get it over with. I need help! What enviroments should I work in? Does listening to classical and jazz really work to study? Does chewing gum help? Should I eat something before? HELP MEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can never get any studying done at home because of the distractions of TV, internet, and people. Whenever I need to get some serious studying done, I head to the school library where they have the private booths (walls on three sides), or the public library where they have a short wall in front so I don't get distracted.

If you must work at home, make it clear to your family that when you are studying, distractions must be kept to a minimum. Hopefully they will respect that.

While some people find it helpful to listen to music, I find it distracting. I actually bought some foam ear plugs from Walgreens that's supposed to block out 60% of the noise in the environment. I wear them all the time and find them very helpful.

Also, I think it's important that you are uncomfortable. Find a comfortable chair (but not too comfortable, you might fall asleep) and sit in a way that is comfortable. (I sit cross-legged on a chair, or with one leg under me. Find the position that's best for you)

Lastly, eating a light snack before helps. Like someone above me said, eat something high in protein instead of high in sugar or caffeine. I usually eat a banana or some grapes.

As for your anxiety. Once you get into studying, you'll probably be so absorbed you won't feel anxious anymore. Just get over your anxiety and get into it. Pace yourself. Don't freak out or be overwhelmed.

Good luck.

Everyone has different things that work for them. What I usually did, was go to the library. Home usually makes me lose concentration, because the bed is there, TV is there. The phone. The internet. I would go to the library, turn off my cell phone, and go to work with the determination to do it. Some libraries have quiet rooms, so you don't get distracted by people. I would find a good quiet place. I would take breaks every hour or two, I can't go more than that. I would stand up, relax. Listen to some music, make a call, get on the internet. Then back to work. Defintely have food. Take a snack and drink in you bag. If I got tired, I would put my head down and just relax. Music would help me, but only if it was something that didn't require too much thinking, I would listen to Techno, because other music would make me sing along and distract me. If I am tired, I would take a nap before I study. Good luck.

Chewing gum can help you focus.

If you can't study wherever you are at ....then go to the library. Some libraries have a room made just for studying (It's super quiet in them ...) I had the same problem with my sister and solved it by staying at the library when I studied.

It sounds like you get distracted very easily, so in your case music may or may not help. If you cannot go to the library, tell your parents that your brother is bothering you when you study. Ask them to give him something to do .. that might spare you a few minutes of studying :D

Another thing is ....try to study during your lunch period (after you've ate) That way you and your friends can do the homework at the same time and help each other. (Try not to copy answers ... however tempting it may be. It will never help you when it comes test time.)

Anyways good luck .... i know how frustrating it can be!

That's tough. Worrying about your obnoxious brother is the worst. Don't you just hate how he can ruin everything? Often there are too many distractions in your bedroom to do homework. Try finding an empty classroom at school . Stay late after school so you can get it over with and come home relaxed. At school your mind is already in learning mode and you might be able to do it more quickly if you are sitting at a school desk. Personally I think the library is overwhelming and I get bored. I think knowing that you can get it over and go home and not have to worry about it wil lmotivate you to concentrate. So stay late or go in early, plus if you use a study hall period (if you have one) you can identify where you are having trouble and go back for help while you are still at school. Do a little research to find out when is the best time for you. When do you feel most productive? Mornings? nights? What are you studying? Maybe it would be more interesting to bring in outside resources like the Internet. Most of the time you can look up a word on wikipedia and then go from there. They word is nicely and make it easy to understand. It helps break down large masses of information into managable pieces. You can always check out sites like Discovery Channel's web site or History Channel web site to see more interesting visuals.

Go to the library with your mp3 player/CD player, what have you, and find a relatively secluded spot somewhere that you can sit comfortably. Make sure you can also look out over an area for a break. Bring a drink, no larger than 20 oz and, if need be, make it an energy drink. Find music that you know very well, something that you won't have to focus on the lyrics to be soothed or motivated by. I find that classical, trance, and jazz/pop type music is the best for me; Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum, etc. Eliminating distractions is the first key, the second is being concentrated
If you can find a booth-type place to site, you're set. All you can see is what is right in front of you. This minimizes distractions and calls to attention only what you're trying to study.
The library also offers a wide area to walk through or around for a break every hour to half an hour. I usually go for 2 hours with music. Good Luck!

Do not listen to music of any type is you have trouble with noise interruptions. Study in a quiet but dark place. Do not put on alot of lights on, just a little lamp in a dark place. Chewing gum does not help because when you chew gum, you would make noise, and if you are nervous for a test of somethin', then chewing gum could probably not help. You should not be too full to study because you would just start to get sleepy if you start studying after you eat. If there are no environments that are the studious type, then go to tha library.

If noise inturrupts you, I don't think music or tv won't help.
That only works if you can't pay attention unless you have something to listen to.
You need a really quiet environment- find a place that you can go to without interuptions. If its impossable to find a place at home, go to the library in sit in a corner where no one will bother you/make noise.
Chewing gum (normally minty flavored) or eating a mint helps with focusing.

Don't stress out and try to do all the studying in one sitting; make sure to take breaks every once in awhile. If you don't take a break, you're only going to get more frustraited and overwhelmed because your head can't handle it all at once.

I use http://www.flashcardmachine.com/ to help me study; you can use other people's flash cards, or make your own. They've helped me a LOT; raised my biology test scores from high Cs and low Bs to high As! Great for memorization.

Make sure you aren't hungry before you start studying, or you won't be able to focus. Don't eat a lot before studying either; you'll feel tired. Eat a light snack. (thats why a lot of people have a little snack after school before they start their homework; it gives them a little break and their mind can relax before going on to your homework.)

-no distractions (music, tv, people)
-quiet envioromment (if not at home, find an unocupied spot at the library)
-chew some mint gum or eat a mint
-have breaks in between to give your mind a rest
-eat a light snack (so you're not hungry or too full)

Studying can be difficult sometimes. I'm in college. I study better at night or early in the morning when others are asleep and the house is quiet. If that doesn't work you can try the library to get away from your brother. Does your bedroom door lock? That might keep him out and make you less anxous.

Recently on Oprah they had a study that said that listening to band music helps your brain work better, but I've never tried it. I've also heard that using the smell of lavender is supposed to relax you and help you to study better.

As far as food goes, yes you should have a snack before studying to keep your energy levels up, but NOT SUGAR. Protein is good before a test (meat, eggs, cheese, milk) also blueberrys are very good for you or other fruit.

Good luck....

wow..! calm down girl... the last thing u wanna do is to panick.. panicking itself needs energy, dont waste that energy on panicking, relax, soothe ur self, calm down, take a deep breath.... breathe in breathe out.. lol..

different ppl need different kind of environment to study.. for me i'd prefer studying in my room alone with the door locked therefore there'll be no interruption or whatsoever. some ppl needs to chew on sth while studying, n if u think u need this, then plz chew on sth healthy, like fruits etc.
do not stress urself too much, ur eyes n brain need a rest too, take a break at maybe 40 mins interval? make it 30.. lol do sth. else if u feel urself slacking. there's no point in continuing when there's nothing accomplished within that period of time.. u can try listening to soothing music, juz make sure it doesnt destroy ur ability to focus. well it doesnt hurt to try, and if it didnt work try sth else change ur venue maybe outdoors? garden? library? anywhere where u think u can get peace and quiet..
last but not least, eat a healthy diet, cut off those junk foods drink sufficient water, get enough sleep. a healthy mind and body is the key towards greater concentration, better focus and overall a less anxious being, i think.. :)
hope this helps in one way or another
take care and gd luck
with love ^_^

I have ADD and it's hard for me to study as well. I know this sounds backwards but the only way i can get anything done is with the TV on, it kind of blocks everything else out so that it doesn't distract me. I guess its better to only have one distraction then 10. oh yeah, i only put on things i don't enjoy watching. If i have to read i listen to metal the fast beat helps me to read faster and you can't hear the words as well so your not as distracted by them. Good luck
