I have a Gateway laptop, about a year old with an intel centrino 1.5 ghz processor. I want to buy a gam that rquires a 1.7 ghz processor. Is there a way I can upgrade my computer to 2 ghz (for future programs)? I will award a best answer to whoever gives me the best answer. Also, if this can be done, how and which processor would be best?

You may need to get a new one with the memory you need.

no you can't upgrade processors, one of my biggest pet peeves with the technological world. They just wanna make sure we have to buy new laptops every 3 years to keep up with performance levels of new programs and games and their graphics. Desktops are handier if you know anything about building your own computer and some older mac laptops can upgrade their processors as well. For those of us who live on laptops, we need new ones to keep up obviously the new intel core duo is impressive. If you're going to buy a new laptop, you really want to get a processor that has at least 2. GHz tho, anything slower will be obsolete next week

In some cases, YES

I am not familiar with your particular system, but:
1. You must use a processor in the same "family", using the same socket.
2. You MAY have to change jumper settings on the motherboard.
3. You should have LARGE, FAST RAM for games, so check that at the same time. You maybe should upgrade that also.

I have found that laptops are VERY compact, and sometimes require special tools to do the work correctly (like getting the case open on some of them.) Unless you are VERY "mechanically inclined" I suggest you let a computer shop do the work.

OR

The simplest method, trade your unit in on an "improved" model that has what you need already installed! (Be sure to save everything you want to "external" media like CD's, a "Plug in" drive, etc.)

The short answer would be Yes, they can be upgrade and some models probably would be totally unable to. The longer answer would ask the question why exactly you would want to, and is it worth it. Most walk in stores do not sell Mobile processors because there isn't much of a market to. You will also Have to check your make/model if your laptop, and actually see what processors it will list as compatible.
