I think questioner means that he would understand bigotry better in the white rural South than in the melting pot of New Orleans.
I assume you're one race and your partner's another (your question doesn't say). That's a hard thing for some people to accept, though it's none of their business. They finally have to have the experience of being close to a person of another race before they learn that race is irrelevant to feelings. Lots of people will never make that leap. I'm sorry you and your GF have to go through so much. I'm a white guy; one time a black woman and I were attracted to each other and talked about dating, and decided finally that we wouldn't because we didn't want every night out to turn into 400 minor and maybe 1 or 2 major acts of bigotry. (We fulfilled ourselves in private, and it was heaven.) Good luck getting through the trouble in New Orleans, where all this stuff seems to magnify rather than diminish, lately.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you saying that people give you a hard time because you are from New Orleans, and White, and therefore they assume you are a racist?
If this is the question, my answer would be as follows:
1. They are assuming you are a racist, because of where you're from.
2. This makes them bigoted towards White people who are from the South.
3. Therefore, they are bothered by you, because they are bigots. Bigotry always seems to be rooted in a desire to feel superior by treating others as if they are inferior.
Bigotry based on geography? How incredibly arrogant and stupid.
Not to mention the fact that there is plenty of racial tension in other areas of the country.
Based on your experience with these people, you could just as easily say that people who are not from the South are rude, arrogant bigots. It'd be just as stupid, though.

Unfortunately, there seems to be no end to stupidity. Intolerance is simply ignorance about a race, culture, religion, etc. By the way, are you not displaying the same intolerance by making the statement that you could understand if you were from Mississippi?

Racial intollerance is silly, but it is something that has been occuring FOREVER. I haven't experienced this, but i have a friend who has. She was indian and white and her boyfriend was white. His family called her a n****r when she went to visit him and told him to "take that dirt outside". Her father is indian and half black, so the n word really disturbed and upset her. It upset me too (and i'm white), not just because this was my friend, but because i feel for all people in this world. We are all people regardless of skin tone and racial background. I hope people can realize this one day. I wish the two of you the best of luck and happiness.

We get stuck in our ways, people are like dogs we need to be trained. A lot of people get shocked when they see a mix of black and white interracial dating. You can't blame them its like seeing a duck and a horse in-love. lol
So you will have to understand that some people can accept it, others can't. And you can be the bigger person about it. You can stand strong for who you love no matter what color they are.
It comes down to ignorance, and time. We are evolving and soon, but not in our life time things will be more accepted. Sorry you have to deal with it, but stay strong. quack quack :)
