Jersey City is gentrifying and expensive. Newark hasn't quite got there yet. The most affordable places are in Southern NJ. I actually lived for a month in Trenton. It is gentrifying also. It isn't bad, but was just too far from NYC. It's closer to Philly. As the other guy said, Camden is cheap also, but be careful of which area you move into. All of those cities will be different in the next five years so it is a good time to buy real estate there.

I envy you since I love the Northeast. I ended up moving back to the Southwest.

I personally live in newark. newark is the biggest city in new jersey. so it depends on what section you live in. newark the mayor is tryin to make it better crime and street wise. but rent is expensive i kno in some places. i dont kno much bout jersey city.

I would reccomend Camden - very good cost of living there!
