This car is well maintained and have had no trouble till now. It jerks only when you press the gas pedal, then when you let the gas pedal go, it coasts smooth. When it is jerking, the voltage meter goes up and down too. We changed the fuel filter and didn't help. Any ideas on what it might be??

Does the "Check Engine" light come on too?
First step for the diagnostics is to query the car's computer for codes stored in its library.

Go Here for the procedure------->

http://autorepair.about.com/cs/troubleshooting/l/bl_dtcs_18a.htm

...and scroll all the way down below the descriptions of the codes for the procedure.
NOTE-->A meter is NOT necessary. Merely make the jumper wire connection with a paperclip as described, and turn the ignition key to "Run" but do not start the car. Pay very close attention to the "Check Engine" light. It will begin to clash with pauses between flashes. Short flashes are digits, longer flashes indicate second and third digits, while the longest pauses are the delineator between each code.
***, pause, **, pause, *****, long pause indicates a "325" code.
Now you can check the descriptions and identify the circuit(s) or system(s) where the computer (ECM) has identified a fault or failure.
With this information, refer to a repair manual (parts or book store, library, etc) and follow the proper diagnostic and repair procedures for each code.
REMEMBER----> the code(s) refer to a failure in a circuit or system and NOT NECESSARILY a particular component.
If you feel uncomfortable at this level of diagnosis and repair, at least you can now speak intelligently with the repair shop. Try to locate a REPUTABLE repair facility that displays the ASE shingle. Or try the dealer (they also subscribe to the ASE testing)

Good Luck

You may have a damaged distributo cap or rotor. Now with the cooler weather, the moisture on the cap or inside the cap will crack when the engine gets hot. Check the entire ignition system 1st. Wires, plugs. cap and rotor.
good luck...........

The problem your car has, could be difficult for you to solve .,Some auto-techs might have a difficult time too! A top-notch pro would "scan" the vehicles computer and observe actual "live readings" of sensor/component operations. Mis-fire's and air/fuel regulation are suspect to be the cause of your current problem. Take the car to a reputable Repair shop for this kind of problem/repair. Good luck!
