Actually AMD has been beating Intel soundly up until recently. Anyway, there is a pretty big difference, the Core Duo is still based on the architecture that the Pentium 4 and Pentium Ms were based on, while the Core 2 Duo is based on the brand new architecture. The Core 2 Duo will give you better performance and use less power.

Just to further the AMD point, while the Core 2 Duo is the best thing out now, AMD makes very good processors and has been beating Intel really soundly recently, I am really not sure what that other answer was talking about.

Go here:

This link takes you directly to the Intel comparision charts. Select a processor in one category and another in a different category and then click "Compare". A new window will open with a side by side comparision chart. You can select multiple processors by holding down Ctrl on your keyboard while clicking choices, then click Compare and all of your choices will be side by side. This will enable you to verify what information you are seeking regarding all of the different chipsets availabe by Intel.

Good luck and have fun comparing the different processors!

Oh, by the way, the magizine webisites doing comparisions of Pentium and Centrino all say that the benchmarks show that the Pentium still out performs Centrino. That while Intel has competing products the Pentium is sitll the superior processor for all sorts of computing needs, but especially for Gamers. Do your own comparisions, and Yes, heat is a high disadvantage for the Cintrino. You need a very strong cooling system if you use a Cintrino for Gaming.

While AMD is slowly improving its processors they still have a far way to go until they will be even closely matched to Intel's. Keep that in mind when looking for a machine, and remember there really IS a significant reason why one processor is more expensive than another. When it comes to processors higher prices does get you better performance. Just as does the video cards available today.

a couple of decades of nano meters in the planar substrate, but, who's counting?

Actually, a 65nm thickness in the substrate can mean upto 20% better throughput, due to higher heat flow, than the 90nm thick substrate.

So, there could be a huge temperature difference, and, the magazines describing the dual core duo in the new machines, mention exactly that, the high heat loads, and loud fans in last years top killer machines!

Plus, the fact that they saw upto a 68% increase in frame rates in the Quake Benchmark tests!!!
