Two problems.
1, you have socialized medicine. Which is fair, just and the right thing to do. And we can't have that, now can we?
2, If Canadians were U.S. citizens, we would no longer be able to deport Bryan Adams, Shania Twain and Celine Dion.

The international community. If US soldiers were to cross the border to invade, don't you think that things might get a little dicey for the US?
The Brits would want nothing to do with it, and most likely would jump in on our side. Likewise with the Russians, possibly the Chineese, and most definitely all of NATO. And if there is a total embargo on the US, what's left of the current American economy will crumble.
Not to mention that the US have tried to invade Canada a few times by now. During the War of Independance, they tried to force us into the conflict, and got tossed back over the border. In 1812, some brainless US general tried to invade us in winter. What kind of an idiot invades Canada in the wintertime? Napoleon and Hitler tried the same in Russia, and we all know how that went. And regarding the war of 1812, maybe I should point out that the White House, which was a Pink House at the time, did get burnt to the ground by our militia.
And another invasion attempt in 1837, which also failed miserably. Trust me, there is already a real bad track record for anyone trying to invade us.
And while we have 2300 men and women in Afghanistan, we have enough troops back home to make the US forces' day really, really miserable. We're not stupid enough to stand and fight a conventional war against the US. Don't know if you noticed, but Canada has a lot of back country, we speak the same language, we look the same, and to make it worse we use the same ammunition and fuel you guys do.
As for arming border guards, it's going to start in the very near future. You just can't give guns and no training to members of any agency. Before anyone is issued a firearm, they should have been trained on it, qualified on it, and know it inside and out. And that takes time and money. Money that, if it was diverted from other government agencies, will cause the public to scream bloody murder.

PET our best PM you were joking? He caused most of our problems today. Our debt started by him, our immigration mess, and our social policy mess. And until PET was elected our dollar was stronger than the american dollar.
The only universal health care should be emergency medicine, if people don't take care of their health why should the rest pay for it. But no one should be ignored in an emergency, an america has emergency universal care, just you get transferred when better.
We do have oil more than you know, we have not tapped into all our resources yet.
A lot of good reasons to come after us.
Please do maybe the ones that came here claiming for a better life now demand us to change for them will stand up for canada than just their culture. You might do us a favour.
Fact though we are to integrated with each country to do any annexing lol. You will have to fight relatives. But you did that before.
But I do like some of the comments they made me laugh.
One day there will be a union like in europe with Canada Mexico U.S.A.
Where we will all benefit from each other, we are still to young as nations to do this.
Mexico is immature canada is a youth and america is like a big brother.
But otherwise our differences do make life interesting.
And if you want universal health care and other social services we have be prepared to lose 50% of your income to taxes.
Which is causing middle class people to go down the ladder.

Well, there are quite a few reasons. Why ruin a perfectly good friendship by getting "married". Canada seems do be doing very well on Her own, and perhaps the current G'ovt here would like to have a nice place to go and live when they screw us all up. Plus, with no border, there would be many people out of work. Not good for the unemployment figures. That makes the current leaders look bad. And of course, the best reason. You have no oil. Why would we want to take over a country with no oil? Oh, by the way. Budget cuts have left our border patrol to the North armed, but with no ammo. Bullets cost money. Nice question, sorry all I could do was make light of it.

Right now the two countries are on friendly terms and have very many things in common. English is the main language spoken in both, common law tradition, and both countries have beaten the crap out of the Germans. They are allies. There is no need for one to annex the other, though the Yanks did try to take over what became Canada during the War of 1812-14.

In Case you weren't aware Canada has lost more solders in Afghanistan than the UK and%wise by population more than the US. You're not a Canadian, you are a scumbag.
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound hostile to anyone other then the moron asking the ques. Someone said, they didn't want Canada because there is no oil. Good, now convince Bush of that.

You looking for a "war of the tongues" between Canadians and Americans? Sorry, not gonna happen ... we've been thisclose for a very long time (regardless of some of the tasteless posts stated here).
We compliment each other. What one country lacks ... the other makes up for. But, that doesn't mean we'd be beneficial to each other as one country. We're kinda of like oil and vinegar ... good on a salad, but try and mix the two together in a bottle ... they just don't mix well.

The united states do not want France to make a permanent Colony in Quebec, otherwise it would have happened a long time back.If they do it now all French Canadian vote will go to Democratic party and that is No No for the Republicans. And Quebec will insist on keeping French as their Language which is not acceptable to Anglo America.Oh yes Alberta might join USA It has the largest amount of Oil any where in the World.More Oil than all OPEC combined. And the good thing is that production cost is only about $14 a barrel

It's a combination of their good will and the multi cultural experiment begun by Our greatest Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. We're a deeply socialist nation despite all the democracy rhetoric and they aren't big fans of that either. As we speak the same language,( LOL, well more or less!! ) and reflect similar cultural identities ( Eh? Maybe, sort of!) from the common ground once shared with Britain it reflects well on their good nature not to make good on manifestdestiny, hell they've picked up half of Mexico and Michigan was once Ours!! Let's be happy they stopped there!

Why would they? And weapons are not the only thing that come into politics anymore. Its a little tricky to just walk up to your neighbour country that's pretty much the same geographical size and say, "So we were thinking it would be better if we just took you over. Hope you don't mind" like that's going to fly. I think Canadians have enough of a spine that we wouldn't let that happen!
