the only thing you can do is tell him honestly that he is welcome, and treat him as though he is. He will sense that you are sincere, and with that and time everything should work out fine.

try asking him to fix something. maybe he's feeling useless and in the way. getting him a little bit involved around the home might ease up his tenseness. but don't start assigning him "honey do" chores as that will only make him resentful. i'm thinking more along the lines of "darn it. i tried to fix this silly thing and it's just not cooperating with me." then, hopefully he pipes up and says "let me take a look at it."
too many times, we enter someone's home and we feel in the way. when my daughter brought her boyfriend home for a family bbq last summer (for the first time), i handed him the spatula and put him in charge of grilling the burgers. giving him that little something to do took the tenseness out of the situation and he was feeling at ease in no time at all.

easy start talking to him more ask about his family
try to get to know him, go out as a family so he would feel he is part of the family
