We are returning from London to South Africa after 3 years over here, but not sure where to live when we are back there. I am in finance (accounting/financial management,CA), my girlfriend is a teacher. Any suggestions? Bit scared of the crime, but also need to be a place where there's work and a good lifestyle. Not Johannesburg or Cape Town please - don;t want the traffic.

If you are in London you really must be sick and tired of traffic congestion. Well, as an answerer above has said, if you neither want Johannesburg nor Cape Town, then the obvious option is Durban. We still have other great cities which are not popular for crime like East London, Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth, but work-wise chances could be slimmer. Traffic congestion is still a big problem in Durban though, but job opportunities are there.

Somerset West - +- 45 km from Cape Town, 10km from Stellenbosch, 5km from Strand & +-8 km gordons Bay -all by the sea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(there is crime & traffic problems all over SA - but our crime/traffic is ok - Gordons Bay rated in top 5 safest places to live in C.Town)
All property is relatively expensive in Cape areas, but u could pick up a good deal
Shopping is great - Somerset West mall, beaches are great, winelands, mountains and definately enough jobs in SWest, stellenbosch area so that u do not have to travel int Cape Town CBD.We have enough modern facilities around, if required, but we are out of the hustle & bustle of the city where u can enjoy picnics, hiking , beaches....just plain "free" chilling !!!!
I grew up in JHB, lived in London for a year then moved to S/West - best move ever!!!!!. ( iam married with 2 kids: 6 & 11 )
By the way local goverment schools & pre-schools in Somerset West are top class. - I have a sister in JHB who is a teacher, and she totally raves about the education/facilities in our area - their are also a few private schools in S/W.
Do a bit more research......u wont be sorry !!! This is a great lifestyle for u & family to grow up in !!!
www.helderberg.com have a look at district mail - our local paper

Why not try Phalaborwa, it is small town, but has a lot to offer! You are on the border of the Kruger National Park, Hans Merensky Golf Estate and the crime rate is very low.

The choice you are making to go home is not an easy one, I left UK in 2000, spent 5 years back in SA(Phalaborwa), but I came back to UK. It is hard to adjust to 3rd world living once you have been here. Good Luck and hope it all goes well!!!!

'You are probably feeling homesick. I'm a teacher and my hubby is an accountant. We left SA 5 years ago because of affirmative action. I assume you must be black or you wouldn't be considering going back. Where are you going to get a job? Stay put is my advice.

Some of the best places to be these days: Potchefstroom, Klerksdorp, P.E., Durban, Pinetown, and of course , good old Gauteng.
