First assess how far he fell - did he fall off the couch or a kitchen counter?
Next - how is he acting? Did he cry until you picked him up or did he not make a peep? (Crying is good.) Did he vomit? No? Good. Is he moving and acting normally for him? Yes? Good. Look at his eyes - are the pupils about the same size? If they are, good.
Watch him over the next 24-36 hours. If he vomits, take him to the ER. It's fine to let him sleep and do whatever normal activites he feels like doing. If it's time for a nap or bedtime, let him. Just go to him every couple of hours or so and tickle his foot. You don't have to wake him fully - you just want him to kick your hand away. If he doesn't respond to you tickling his foot or something, take him to the ER.
Little kids are tougher than they look.

My daughter has been falling down a lot lately now that she's started walking and every time she does I of course come right to her aid. She'll always calm down in 30 seconds or so, meaning it just scared her and didnt hurt too bad. A good idea to know the signs of something more serious though!
Here's an article that explains when your baby (0-12mths) has a concussion and should see the Dr ASAP. I'll copy/paste the most important:
My baby fell and hit his head. How can I tell if he has a concussion?
Your baby may have one or more of these early signs of a concussion:
• loss of consciousness
• headache
• dizziness
• confusion
• nausea
• vomiting
Hope that helps.

I know its hard not to worry. But you're about to be entering the months where your baby is going to fall a lot. He will start standing, slipping, losing balance, trying to walk. It's very nerve wracking and if I took my baby to the hospital every time he slipped and hit his head we would have gone to the ER 4 times today. We also have hard wood floors and we get some of the soft baby play mats that almost covers the entire living room. It's not much of a fashion statement but it keeps him a little bit safer. I won't re-list the signs of a concussion since diet C did a really good job on that already.

My son hit his head on the floor and on the door whenever he got made for like 5 months. His doctor told me he would be fine even if he got a little bruise here and there b/c he would stop as soon as it hurt. Also she told me not to make a big deal about it otherwise he would keep doing it for attention. She said the only time to make him stop is if he was on concrete or tile. Your son should be fine but if your still concerned I'd call his doctor.

If he doesn't act funny. If after you pick him up he calms down and stops crying. If he calms to comfort it's most likely just a bump that scared him. If he acts differently or has little interest in things or doesn't calm when held I'd take him to the ER.

If you're worried enough to ask the question, get a paediatrician to have a look.
