Ya know, there was a time when I would've said "Go for it! Kids that age, especially boys, really seem to like the horror/fright genre, etc etc." But I gotta say, now that I've been living in a society that shuns graphic violence in entertainment, I think they're on to something. I'm starting to buy into all of that "violence desensitizes kids" stuff.
Now when I hear about a senseless murder, or random violence, on the news, I actually stop and listen, and consider this is a real person; whereas before, I'd tune out or gloss over. As an adult(?) making these decisions for a 13 year old, the fact that you'd even ask the question makes me think you're wondering about the validity of this type entertainment for impressionable young teens. I think you should stick with your gut feeling. There are loads (loads!!) of great movies out, some maybe you've never heard of, that are not voilent, and much better choice for kids this age.

depends on the maturity level of the 13 year old. I saw my first scary movie when I was 8. My kids have seen some already and know all about special effects so they know it isn't real. If they get too scared just turn it off.
oh right i forgot about the bathtub scene, could not take a shower without constantly checking the drain lol, but other movies made it worse like IT and Mirror Mirror

No, I wouldn't recommend it, especially if the kid's never seen a horror movie. Nightmare has some really hideous images in it. Try something less gruesome, something fun like "Ghostbusters" or "Beetlejuice" and let the kid work into more intense things.

Go for it! We showed my 11 year old nephew Evil Dead, and it was the funniest experience of my life. While the movie was incredibly cheesy to me, he was scared out of his ever-loving mind. I think it's perfectly okay for kids to get that way sometimes. There's something intrinsically fun in being scared about something you know is fake.

It was the first one I saw. Couldn't take a bath for years afterwards...only showers...because of Freddie's hand coming up out of the bath tub!!
Good times! Let the kid watch it! It's more stupid than anything else!

Maybe not a good idea. Try starting with the old classics like "Dracula" or "Frankenstein".
