spends all his time there, especially because of tv, computer, etc. no real friends, but does great in school. problem or not?

It's not really a problem, but every person needs some social interactions. No matter how well you are doing in school you will never get any further with your goals if you don't bond with others and make a name for yourself. It's hard for serious students to have a life, I know, but at the same time you must build relationships because they will be helpful to you in the long run. You need to interact with others for stability on so many different levels.

It's not outwardly "normal," because "normal" is established by the surrounding society. The end question is, "problem or not?" It is only a problem if the young man is unhappy with his situation, or if he is depressed or has other unhealthy mental attributes.

I would not describe this as "abnormal" in a way that would show up as proof of a person being a sociopath, psychopath, etc.

I would describe it as behavior that is not self-actualizing, and would hope that therapy would let them be much happier.
