If I plug my laptop into our BT phonline which has Broadband set up on, I should be able to just open up Internet explorer and be on the internet right? - I dont need any additional software?
- My flatmate has it all set up, but she is away for ages and I have not been able to dial up on my work laptop on that line. Any ideas? I am thinking about bringing down my own laptop and trying that, but no point if I need extra software.

most pc,s and laptops can just plug straight into bt broadband equipment and then directly on to broadband
bt only supply cd software for users who a) have systems running windows 98/me and for b) for users using a u.s.b connection as certain drivers are needed for this type of connection
however if you are using a ethernet you can just plug in,set your homepage in internet options and then start using the internet(remember to install anti virus and spyware protection)
with reference to a wireless laptop (or wired) you can do exactly the same and if you are using a wireless usb device(or a pcmcia card) you need to install their software but not the bt software
so as long as you have a ethernet(firewire) socket on your laptop you will be ok,however if you only have a u.s.b socket you can download the nessecary software from http://www.bt.com/btbroadband/ns_presale.jsp?targetSection=DOWNLOAD_CENTRE_DRIVERS&showsub=ns_help_support&showsub3=NS-LM_Download_Centre&obsNoSee=Y&vStore=1322&obsPage=/btbroadband/ns_presale.jsp&obsType=LINK&obsOID=33102
you will find all the bt router modems listed on this page and all the correct downloads, just download these and either burn them to disk(recommended) or save them to a folder for later use
hope this has helped you
good luck

If your plugging into a router provided by bt or another manufacturer, The username and password should have already been configured on the router by your flat mate working as an always on connection. If this is the case you can plug an ethernet cable stright into the router and surf away. If you want to connect wireless you may have to configure the router to accept your laptops mac address. you can find out what your mac address is by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig /all this will list the details of your network card showing it's mac address, Or it might be configured to use WEP encryption this is a kind of key to allow you to access that router, you will have to ask your flat mate if he is using WEP or not.

fairly sure that BT associates account names (login names) to a particular number that is being used ergo your account wont work on a different phone line. unless of course you both are runing through a router which means account info is held on the router, not your computer.

REMEMBER PEEPS, ROUTERS HOLD ACCOUNT INFO, MODEMS DO NOT!!!!!!
