at the rate this planet is going, we won't make it that long (North Korean Nukes and all) .... if we do actually get our s**t together and something does hit that is "significant" there ain't a damn thing any of us can do about it anyway .... and don't bother looking to that 100 year prediction thing because there was a planet killer that passed us by not too long ago that no one saw until the last minute .... people can't even predict how long their own marriage will last - how could someone find a rock the size of Ohio, out in the middle of nowhere and determine it's exact path, potential collisions with other objects flying around at random, gravitational variables and the hand of God to determine that it's going to slam into Brunei in 728 days, 9 hours, 16 minutes and 42 seconds .... oh, and if this is for a school paper ? that dead guy that used to do the series Nova on PBS talked a whole bunch about that stuff .... look for a book or two by him - whatshisname ....

They just mention it in the news. Russian astronomers said last Friday that an asteroid now orbiting the sun may strike the planet in 2035 and they said they will not be sure until 2028 when it approaches Earth. They are not ruling it out, but may fly close proximity to the Earth which will alter the asteroid's orbit and possibly give clues to a likelihood of future impacts. That is scary. It could be the end of Earth. Yikes! I better get rid of my virginity for the first time, I don't want to die a virgin.

Meteorites: a hundred% hazard, quite in case you think approximately the ambience component of Earth, yet the two way its rather lots specific. Asteroids: relatively low, via fact asteroids basically hit the Earth each a number of million years. so as that they're a uncommon area climate hazard (pondering people's life cases). i do no longer tend to be bothered approximately dying by way of asteroid, yet an asteroid impact interior 50-a hundred years isn't impossible.

It very likely could happen, it all depends on your definition of "significant". Something the size of the object that exploded over Tunguska in 1908 comes around every 100 years or so, so statistically we're about due.
If you're not familiar with Tunguska, you should really look it up.

No, because astronomers can project their trajectory thousands of years in advance.
Unless....one came out of a blind spot. Then we're all pwnt. :)
