Virtual memory is the swap space alloted on the hard disk. It has a minimum and a maximum value. Usually minimum is equal to the physical RAM on your pc. and the maximum is two and half times the RAM. You can find the virtual memory setting on the location in winXP
start > control panel > system > advanced > performance settings > Advanced > Virtual Memory Change
select the hard disk partition. select the custom size radio button. Enter values.Press OK. Allocate VM on all partitions of the hard disk.

Kenneth has the right idea....Because the system will AUTOMATICALLY take as much as it needs from the "big" (free space/Not RAM)memory as it needs. Just as long as there is enough of THAT too. Most people have enough. Check yours..Go to:
My Computer
Right Click C: Drive
Click Properties
Look in General tab

Good luck

Check your RAM too:
Go to My Computer
Click the Folders button so the tree can be seen on the left side
Right click "My Computer"
Click properties....

If not enough THERE...You need more of BOTH memory but you possibly can get away with one or the other
Have someone "gift" you the RAM and buy "cheaper" Storage Memory.... RAM is more valuable though...

Virtual memory is the use of hard disk space to allow program(s) to continue to run when they run out of RAM. You can change the amount of hard disk space dedicated to this use as a stop gap solution, but the real answer is to add more RAM.

You got too much running in the background
start-->run --> msconfig, and click off what you don't need. Careful not to mess with system files though
