I just moved into a new neighborhood, and they're everywhere! Animal control told me, "if you trap them, we'll get rid of the them.", but I don't have the time or ambition to do that. What's the easiest way to kill them? Does rat poison work?

It's not legal to put out poison. We have the same problem in our neighborhood, many move away and leave their cats, and they end up in our yard. We borrowed traps from aspca and took them there, the ones that were not feral they kept to adopt out. It only takes the same amount of time to bait a trap and take them in to aspca as it does to poison and bury them, aye?

animal rights laws its against the law to kill strays animal cruelty
if you kill those cats u will have more trouble then traping them. The easiest way is take thier advice or reach out to humane societys they will help you oo and rat poison doesnt work.

buy a animal trap, like one for racoons then bait it with wet food, then either release elsewhere OR take them to humane society. wear thick gloves though when near the strays and immedietly clen and disenfect any scratches you may get cause you could get sick, try baiting the trap with wet cat food. i had a stray problem and i did the trap and release and the strays never returned...thank god! the animal shelter may even be able to lend some traps out, the traps are totally humane and will not hurt the animals.

Where do you live that it would be legal to kill them?

Call the local SPCA and ask them if they have a program that would help by trapping them humanely and then take them to be adopted.

Make a donation to your local humane society. Be pro-active and educate others to spay or neuter their animals so there are fewer unwanted animals.

Make sure you don't get rid of anyone's pet.

Best advice: live and let live

Please don't poison them. The poor creatures are just trying to survive. This is what happens when people don't neuter their pets. Call the ASPCA and ask for their advice. Also, it's not that hard to trap them. Then maybe someone can find them a good home. Be humane.

I don't know if there's a way to keep them off your property. Some companies sell things that you stick in your yard that emit high frequency noises to keep moles away. Maybe they have them for cats?

Trust me, you don't want to poison them. It's veru cruel. However, since you suggested it, I'm sure you don't care about the cruelty aspect, so instead think of the legal one. It's animal cruelty and you can be arrested for it. Not to mention, what if somebody's dog gets out and eats the poison? You can get in some major legal trouble if somebody's pet dies from your irresponsible actions.

poisoning them to kill them is not nice...it'll put a guilty conscience on your shoulder!

there was this one cat who would come by our place after getting rid of our cat (they might have been friends). we fed him a couple of times but stopped because it was just a nuisance. so when it came around at night meowing like it was the end of the world, we would open the door and splash a big gulp cup of water onto him and it would scatter away. we did that maybe at least 2-3 times and the cat finally stayed away. sad to let hunger, but happy that we dont have to feel obligated to feed it anymore.

if that doesnt work... get your friend's dog to runa muck around your house to chase them away!

goodluck!

OHH IT'S GREAT FUN.... GAT A HAVE A HEART TRAP, & GO TO TOWN, SARDINES / TUNA WORK BEST. IF YOU DON'T , YOU'LL NEVER BE RID OF FLEAS ( I LIVED IT )! WHEN YOU'RE DONE WITH YOUR INITIAL RUN ( I CAUGHT 12 IN ABOUT 15 DAYS ) IT WILL SLOW UP, UNTIL THE OTHER CRIMINAL CATS REALIZE THEIR NEIGHBOR IS NO LONGER AROUND, AND THEY WILL TRY TO OCCUPY/CLAM NEW GROUND.... HERE WE GO AGAIN!

ammonia will make them go away,
they can't stand the smell,

splash some around the yard ( not so much on the grass)
,
places they hide,

if you like, there is also a product called lassie-away at wal-mart
it does the same, and doesn't smell to you.
