For desktops, Core 2 duo is the newest architecture developed by Intel.Intel spent 5 years and billions to achieve this new architecture to beat its rival AMD. Intel literally, abandoned Net-burst architecture which forms Core Duo (2 core processors, e.g. D960, D930, T2600 etc.).If I were you I wouldn't hesitate to spend fortune on Core 2 based processors, specially the upcoming Kentsfield CPU (4 core processor, will release in 2 week of Nov.) outperforming old CPUs by 67%.
By the same token, for servers and workstations, Core 2 based Xeon processors (5130, 5140, 5160 etc) and upcoming Cloverton (4 core processors, release in Nov.) are winners over competitor.Check out at: www.tomshardware.com/, www.anandtech.com/ , www.vr-zone.com/

I actually prefer the new AMD Athlon Dual-Core 64x2. I just purchased a computer from Micro One and I love it !!! It's so fast and I can do all of my multi-tasking, media, homework, and gaming. I tried for months to find a great deal on a computer, then I came across this one, definately worth the wait !!!
