I know it's a 7 year old question, but it hasn't been properly answered, so I'll leave an answer for people still searching.
The nickname 'Skip' means that he shares his exact name with his grandfather. Hence, he skipped a generation. The nickname 'Trip' means his and his father all share a name with his grandfather.
John Smith (Grandfather)
Joe Smith (Father)
John Smith, Jr. (or Skip)
John Smith (Grandfather)
John Smith, Jr. (Father or Junior)
John Smith, III (or Trip)

I have several as well...Smitty because my last name is Smith, Sarge, because I'm a retired Army Sergeant First Class, Scooter, cause I used to ride one (wrecked it) and Papa Smurf. Don't know where that one came from. Some of my students used to call me that. There are a couple more but I can't put them on here. Community Guidelines you know.
