I have definately heard of it. According to the BGG link it was designed for 2 players, so I'm sure it is fine as a couples game. As for the female thing, I guess it would depend on the female. It has a war theme and is more of a strategy/thought kind of game rather than a luck-based game.

Memoir '44 is one of a series of games called Command & Colors by its designer, Richard Borg (a friend of mine). The other games are Battle-Cry! (The American Civil War, now of out of print by Avalon Hill) and Ancients (Ancient Roman, et al. by GMT Games). Players choose a scenario (or make up their own) set up the units needed. The map is divided into three sections: left, center and right. Because the players face each other, one player's left is the other's right. Each player is dealt a hand of cards. The number of cards varies depending on scenario and who actually won the real life battle simulated. On one's turn, one plays a card follows it's instructions and then all units within range of an opponent may attack.

It's pretty simple as far as wargames go (and wargames as a rule can be pretty complicated). You can find out more at www.boardgamegeek.com and www.grognard.com.

BTW, there are precious few females in the wargaming hobby. If your woman enjoys Memoir '44 you have a real find!
