like any business your best bet is to go sniff around the competition.

litterally make a list of every tanning saloon around you on a map. see where they are located compared to population, etc. this will help you place your location as well and not end up just around the corner from a competitor.

but after you have them all listed out, take a few days if not a week and go visit them all. act like you are there for an appointment or you were suppose to pick up your daughter there, etc. act stupid and ask them questions when there....are they busy all the time, what kind of clients, etc. you can act stupid yet seem like you are just passing time with idle conversation.

after you see all the shops in town and taken notes on them....add it all up. what size shop do all the others have, how many beds do they have...how many employees did you see working at any given time, etc. this will give you a good base to go on compared to what all others are doing in your area.

plus it might show waste....like say most shops have 20 beds and are in a 3000 sq ft locaiton yet each shop is normally empty of furniture and customers....you'll know not to build that big....or just the opposite, if always packed w/ customers, you know to get a bigger location.

key to a good biz.....RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH.

good program to use for all this.....google earth....it allows you to mark spots on the map and you can make up a dot map of all other tanning saloons in the area.

Well i don't know ,since there are a lot of spray tans salons now . And I have been in on of those and would rather prefer it to the one with the beds .
Any which way you decide : good luck on your own business

Spray tanning is the most popular out here in California. I know few people who use beds anymore. Mystic Tan and airbrushing is what all the celebs and non-celebs do these days.

I suppose you could still do some beds but I would also look into Mystic.

People are getting more health conscious, and I think everyone knows that it's not smart to do. If you do it, though, make sure it is near a college, or wherever young people are with a little disposable income. You want your place to be popular, and it won't be if people have to wait, so at a minimum, I would think 6 booths.
