Cross over cables are for connecting two devices without the use of a hub or switch.

Ethernet ports (100base T) have 2 out and 2 in lines, if you used a straight cable, the out lines would be meeting up with the out lines on the other computer, b ut in a cross over cable, it switches it so the outlines of your computer go to hte in lines of the other computer, and visa versa.

A network switch has ports with out and in lines that have been switched. This is why you use straight threw cables when connecting your computer to a switch.
