Hi,

I want to specialize in a trade such as bricklaying but would like to know first if there are schools where they actually teach you. I know one can learn something by directly working on the field but that could take a few years as a laborer first.

Apply to a votech school. They should have a Construction Trades department, and you can get trained in Masonry (Bricklaying or Tilesetting). They may have different levels of bricklaying, like basic and advanced bricklaying. Training may require a year or more depending how far you want to go. You might need to take some classes to learn about tools, mixing mortar, work procedures and safety guidelines involved in this trade. The safety guideline exam must be passed to get a certificate. Contact a votech or construction trades school within your region and have a counselor help you get in the program.

The best way to learn is to learn hands on. Become a bricklayers apprentice. If you are good it won't take you long to move up. My husband is a concrete finisher. He started out as a laborer. He is now a supervisor. He has a foreman and 3 laborers that he is over. It takes time but if being a bricklayer is what you want to do the time spent will be worth it.

blueprint readers get paid MUCH more,
and all they do is read blue prints and tell the bricklayers what do do.
