A cord is a unit of volume, just like a gallon or a bushel, no matter how it is cut or stacked or arrayed it must be 128 cubic feet or 18432 cubic inches or 4.740... cubic yards an unskilled stacker might not be able to fit 128 cubic feet of firewood into a 4*4*8 space but the quantity of wood in a cord will always be 128 cubic feet, by law.

There are 128 cubic feet in a cord of wood. Multiple 4x4x8.
