they cancelled my car insurance, which I was going to do anyway, but they're reporting it, which means I'll have a suspended license. I have no problem turning in my plate to avoid any hassles, but how do I do it from Illinois? Can I turn it in here? Also, after I turn it in, will I have to call someone and tell them to avoid suspension, or will it automatically show up in their computer system?

The real issue is why was your insurance cancelled, was it non payment or a claim? All you have to do is contact your DMV and insurance company tell you are no longer driving. they cannot suspend your license because you decide you no longer wish to drive. If you are driving another vehicle you will need insurance.

Contact the secretary of state office and ask them what do you do. They are there to help you, so don't be scared. It's better to get this done now, before the state takes action against you.
Most times they issue you a temporary plate, until yours come in, but you still are required to get insurance. That's the law.

Were you driving while the insurance was cancelled? If you weren't, go to DMV for non-operation paperwork.

Either way, just contact the DMV in your state for info.
