Canadian football is the original form of football that McGill University introduced to Harvard back in the 1800's.

It has three downs, and the US added an extra down to their version to make it easier to play.

I bet if Canada made their own league of baseball that allowed four strikes, the US would say it was too easy and therefore a lesser sport.

It is funny that Canadians invented 3 of the 4 major sports that we play here (Basketball and hockey as well).

One of the 2 forms of rugby actually does have downs (6 to be exact). Our football looks much more like that.

Can't remember if it is Rugby League or Rugby Union. It is the one played with 13 instead of 15 players. I watched it in France and it was just Rugby a XIII vs Rugby a XV

Well, then people could say Rugby is a true type of football since there are no pads and no downs. And you could get hurt a lot easier than football.

So the answer to your question: It is not cheating but the downs were the ways and means to excite and encite people to become fans of the sport. IT is not so much about it being easier or not.

If the score ends at 7-3 or 10-3 instead of 49-21 or 35-31, it could be boring and why some people do not like soccer. But American counterpart added the downs to make the game exciting. That is the same issue with Baseball and Basketball.

Baseball increased strike zone to shorten the game when home run and batters are more prominent these years. Just like basketball have nitty, gritty defense was changed to prevent that so the game could be more fast paced and exciting after Michael Jordan..

So I do not think US would say the game is easier or lesser. More like Americans marketed and made it very exciting (and hence the success of the NFL)

And which has become the much more popular game, American football or Canadian? American by far. The CFL is in deep financial trouble. I've read several reports that the NFL is actually looking into buying the Canadian league as another farm system much like the World League. And if that happens the rules would undoubtably change to match the American version. I wouldn't be surprised at all if such a transaction takes place in the next few years.
