I'm 15 and was wondering when I would start getting a rectal exam. Also, what is the procedure and what does it feel like?

You usually do not need a rectal exam until you are 50 unless you are having problems. Since I am not that old, I do not know the feeling, and I do NOT want to know.

It is not routinely done unless you have a problem. They do a prostate check by inserting a finger in the rectum to feel if the prostate is enlarged. There is also colonoscopy, to check for rectal cancer or palaps. The period of when you should get these would depend on risk factors, age and need. Talk with your Doc and tell him your family history, your medical history and any problems you are having. Ask him/her when you should be getting the exams.

The digital rectal examination (DRE, Latin palpatio per anum or PPA) is the simplest procedure. The patient is placed in a position where the anus is accessible and relaxed (lying on the side, squatting on the examination table, bent over the examination table, etc). The physician inserts a gloved and lubricated finger into the rectum through the anus and palpates the insides.

I think if it was needed your doctor would automatically include it in a physical. Unsually they are checking the colon and that arena, and cancers in that don't appear until later on. It is rare for a Highschool student to be diagnosed with it. And I am sure its as uncomfortable as a womans gyno exam. Not painful but an invasion the same.

At your age, I'd be more concerned of why you want to know what a rectal exam feels like. That isn't what I thought about when I was 15. I mean no disrespect, ...just suggesting , maybe there is an underlying reason you are curious about this. If there isn't, well.....STOP thinking about it, otherwise you will end up being part of the cast of the movie " Jack *** " where those guys do crazy things :)

start the exams about 50 years of age.
