They had a will and today they have removed apartheid from their country. They have been successful by resorting to mostly non-violent moves of Nelson Mandella and his supporters.
They had a will, but neither resources nor power to see it through.
However today their will has found a way and they have been victorious in purging out apartheid from their country.

Due to the belief prevalent at that time that the earth is flat and they will end up in a free fall of water and not land.
